Day Two

Back to the airport! I had to return to meet the rest of the group and to go to orientation. Fortunately, Larry was already returning to go back to Tanzania, so I was able to hitch a ride in his taxi. After some mild panic at the airport, Jamal found me and I met one of the other students on the ride to the hostel where we are staying. It’s one of the church compounds that are built as retreats and run by nuns. I have a room with a single bed, a desk, a closet, and a sink. Mom would be proud because I unpacked most of my luggage and hung up the clothes that require hanging. Even though we’re only going to be here for a few days, it’s nice to be unpacked and a little more organized. Only four other students arrived during the day, the rest are coming in late on a set of two flights from London and Amsterdam. We had dinner promptly at seven and then discovered that there is little to do in the compound at night. Looks like it’s going to be early to bed and early to rise!

Words added to my Swahili vocabulary:

Si(word)-i: not, negation
