Nyamata is a church outside of Kigali where 11,000 individuals were slaughtered during the genocide. We were given a tour by a survivor (one of only seven) of that particular horror. I'm not going to give the details of the significance of each picture, as many of the statements are horribly gruesome. All aspects of the church have been left as a memorial to the murdered, including blood stains. Bones are buried in a mass grave behind the church. Clothes from the individuals that died in this church and in the surrounding area are piled on the pews. The smell in the church is sweet and birds chirp constantly from the roof.
Five of the seven people that survived Nyamata church hid under the gaze of the Virgin Mary for the three days of killing.
